HISTORY OF THE FARMERS’ MARKET IN BRAZOS COUNTY
History of the Farmers’ Market:
Farmers’ markets have been a tradition in the City of Bryan - Government for over a hundred years. The modern version of a farmers’ market in Bryan dates back to 1997, and has been in several different great locations over the years. You might remember when you could find us on Saturday mornings in the parking lot of the Brazos County Health District?
Over ten years ago now, then president Harvey Wise had a vision for an expanded, comfortable, and more convenient market for everyone. He arranged with the city to relocate the market from the Health Department to a convenient and very open area in downtown bounded by 21st and Main.
We knew that location would be temporary pending the redevelopment of downtown. Well after more than a decade, temporary has finally arrived.
The farmers’ market was notified last January that city had sold the property where we meet. They presented the market board with several generous plans for relocation. Several years prior, the city had already anticipated our move and had prepared a likely location in Travis Bryan Midtown Park. Midtown Park offers ample space for both vendors and customers, and future park amenities like the children’s play area including a restroom building will make the customer experience even better.
On September 6, 2025 and then weekly afterwards, you will find The Farmers Market in Brazos County at our new home in Bryan’s Midtown Park. We'll be just east of the Villa Maria entrance but until then, you can find us at our current location in downtown.
Moving the Saturday market is bittersweet for us. Historic Downtown Bryan, Texas holds so many wonderful memories. We’ll continue to be a part of monthly First Friday celebrations hosted by Destination Bryan, Texas in downtown. Look for us at other special events planned by the city.
To all our wonderful customers, weekly visitors, and followers, ya'll are what makes our community and market such a success by supporting your local farmers and ranches, producers, artisans, and craftsmen. Please let all your friends know we are moving.
We look forward to seeing you each Saturday at the weekly market, whether in downtown, Midtown Park, or wherever the road ahead takes us.
The goals in the early days were the same as the goals are today – to create venues where local farmers can connect directly with Brazos Valley consumers, to build a community in an urban setting, and to provide public education on regional farming, gardening and food preparation.
